Discover the Livestock Information Service – Track. Trace. Inform.
The Livestock Information Service is specifically designed to improve the performance and sustainability of the livestock industry by transforming the quality of livestock movement data throughout the supply chain.
Established in 2019, Livestock Information Ltd was created as a joint venture between industry and government to provide a digitally enabled traceability service for recording livestock movements in England.
The digital traceability application is called the Livestock Information Service (or LIS for short) which provides a single sign on platform for livestock keepers and those in the supply chain to report livestock movements, currently for sheep, goat and deer.
In October 2024, the cattle traceability service currently provided by the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) will move to LIS as part of a new upgraded service for cattle keepers. It is planned to also on-board pig movement data onto the platform by the end of 2026, replacing what is currently eaML2. This will provide a dynamic multispecies livestock traceability platform to track livestock movements.
Track
Tracking the movement of livestock digitally means that reports are submitted more quickly and efficiently. Faster, more accurate online movement recording means better disease control.
Trace
Traceability of meat has become increasingly important to consumers over recent years; being able to determine exactly where the food they are buying comes from. It enables them to make decisions based on ethics and environmental issues. It can also provide insights into animal welfare and the quality of the product. Having full traceability puts more trust in the producer.
Inform
In Britain we have some of the highest meat quality and safety standards in the world and the data provided by the Livestock Information Service allows British livestock producers to stand out from the rest. The data provides government and industry with the information they need to respond effectively to animal diseases. The reporting capability will drive innovation in the sector allowing for greater productivity, competitive trade advantages and improved resilience across multiple livestock species.
